Sunday is very important for Christians, because it is the day that Jesus rose from the dead (Mt 28:1; Mk 16:2; Lk 24:1; Jn 20:1); it is the weekly day of rest, recalling the tradition of rest on the Sabbath in the Old Testament. “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest to the Lord your God. You shall do no work” (Ex 20:8-10; Dt 5:12-15).
Answering the initial question, we must understand that the Mass is not an obligation, it is a sacrament, it is thanksgiving to God. It is the opportunity we have during the week to pray in community and as a family, to listen to the Word of God and to nourish ourselves with the Body and Blood of Christ. If we see it only as an obligation, it becomes something we do not want, something we do out of fear or habit, and so it loses value and meaning.
