MEANING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Fr. Tarcisio

The Advent wreath is a sign that is placed in churches or in homes during the weeks before Christmas. It has a circular shape decorated with natural or artificial green branches, and you can add flowers and Christmas decorations.

But what stands out the most are the candles: three purple ones, one pink and one white. Each purple candle represents the Sundays of Advent that prepare us for the Christmas holiday, the Birth of Christ. The pink candle is for the Sunday of Joy, the third, because we are already close to the great feast. The white candle, the one in the center, is lit on Christmas Day and together they represent the light that Christ brings to the world.

Christmas usually moves many feelings of joy, peace, hope, faith…. And these are reflected in the external signs that we put in our church or in our homes. But let us make these signs acquire more value and meaning, through our way of living Advent and Christmas. Let us do our best to ensure that there are fewer arguments, fights, stress and resentments in our families.

Let the lights we use as decorations reflect our faith, our hope, our brotherly love.
