What does God’s tell us this Sunday? OCTOBER 13th, 2024

SUNDAY XXVIII IN ORDINARY TIME

Today's Gospel presents us with Jesus' encounter with a man of good will who fulfilled his religious duties but whose riches prevented him from a generous and detached attitude. He is not the ideal disciple of the followers of Jesus, but he is a reason to warn us of the danger of attachment to riches and to inculcate in us detachment and generosity as basic attitudes for following Jesus.

Detachment from the goods and cares of this life is the moral attitude required for discipleship. By following Jesus, one learns another way of seeing life, of seeing riches and of seeing religion itself.

Jesus' response to the rich young ruler is a concrete call to radical following, not based on the assurance of formal compliance with the law, but on availability and freedom of spirit.
