WHAT DOES THE WORD “AMEN” MEAN

Fr. Tarcisio

“Amen” comes from the Hebrew language, it is a noun that means “certainty or veracity”, related to the word “confirm”. It means “so be it”, “it is so” or “it is true” and is used at the end of thanking God or asking for help.

Its influence is so great that it is one of the few words that is pronounced the same in almost all places in the world, which makes it understandable to most. In the Bible, the word ‘amen’ is used frequently as the response that the people give to one of the prophets when he finishes dictating a prophecy or making a prayer. For example, in Deuteronomy 27:14-19, Moses was giving the commandments to the people of Israel, to which they said ‘Amen’. In the book of Revelation 3:14, Jesus is the “Amen” because “He is the faithful and true witness of the beginning of God’s creation.”

Therefore, from now on, when we say “Amen,” we are affirming that we agree, believe, and trust in what we have been told and what we have asked of God.
