What does the Word of God tell us this Sunday? July 23rd, 2023

Fr. Tarcisio

Today's gospel presents three parables of Jesus: the parable of the wheat and the tares, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of the yeast in the dough. The three are to explain how the kingdom of God works and is present in our world. Of these three, only one is explained, that of the wheat and the tares. This explanation helps us understand how it is that, in the midst of so many good things, there can be so many bad things and what God does to solve those evils.

The parables of the mustard seed and the yeast highlight the strength of God hidden in what is not seen, in the small; those events that seem insignificant but, in due course, flourish and bear fruit like mustard seeds, or transform and enrich like yeast in dough. Perhaps many times it hurts and worries us to see so much evil in the world and we wonder why God allows all this, or why he does not permanently erase evil. These parables invite us to do something to change what we don't like about our reality; It doesn't matter if they are small actions or gestures, because every good action is like the seed or yeast that can improve and transform our world.
