The theme of God's love fills our thoughts today. The first reading shows us that the love of God is no respecter of persons, and salvation has a universal character, as demonstrated by the events that occurred in the house of Centurion Cornelius. God wants all men to be saved and forgiveness of their sins is offered to all.
The second reading today makes a statement that defines the divine being: God is love. Knowing God, listening to him, and following him, is synonymous with living in love, experiencing it vividly, and making it your own. Therefore, whoever does not love has not known God.
The gospel presents us with a moment of intimacy between Christ and his apostles: “I no longer call you servants; I call you friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.” The love of Christ is an expression of the love of the Father. Just as the Father has loved Christ, so Christ has loved us.
