The commandments are what God wants from us. That is the meaning of the Pharisee's question that we read today: “What is the greatest commandment of the Law?” That is, "On what should we concentrate all our forces so that life has meaning and reaches eternity?”
Jesus puts love first: “Love the Lord, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Therefore, we love with everything we are and have. The heart is the place of the person's decisions; the soul is the “vital force”; and the mind is our intelligence. This means that we must use all our strength, without exception, in the love of God. Surrender to him and for him must be total, as Jesus says, “with everything.”
Love for our neighbor must be the same as love for ourselves. That is why love for one's neighbor is also a recognition of the creative will of God and the relationship with him is a reason for praise to the Lord.
